ABSA, NEDBANK deny knowledge of Butterfly linked accounts
Two prominent South African banks Absa and Nedbank are said to have denied being holders of accounts linked to billions of pulas that are believed to have been stolen from Bank of Botswana between 2009-2019.
This is after Bridgette Radebe Motsepe, who has been fingered by the state to be co-signatories to the accounts alongside Welheminah Mphoeng, wrote a letter to both banks seeking clarity on the matter.
She got the following response from ABSA; “ By way of response to the various queries contained in your letter, we made the following observations; Absa has no record of any account with designated number 40892246893.
The document provided under cover of your letter headed Business Client Agreement and marked in the manuscript as ‘L’ does not appear to be an Absa generated document.”
She received the following response from NEDBANK; “ The opposing affidavit references accounts at Nedbank in the names of Blue Flies (Pty) Ltd and Fire File (Pty) Ltd with account numbers 8061923840 and 1099810081 respectively. After conducting a search on our Nedbank systems, we have been unable to find any accounts in the name of Blue Flies (Pty) Ltd / Bluefiles (Pty) Ltd / Fireflies (Pty) Ltd, nor any accounts with the account numbers mentioned.
It, therefore, follows that you cannot be, and are not, a signatory on such non-existent accounts.”
