GOVERNMENT TO DISINFECT ALL PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Government will implement hygiene and sanitation measures in all the 755 primary schools across the country to curb COVID-19 infection.
“The ministry has agreed to protect the more than 37 200 pupils across the country and shield them from the dreadful disease,” said Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Setlhabelo Modukanele.
Mr Modukanele, who was addressing the leadership of local authorities’ in Letlhakeng on March 27, said the measures included the provision of water and refurbishment of ablution blocks in primary schools, installation of water basins and sanitisers where pupils could wash their hands as required.
He urged the leadership to implement measures as directed by the permanent secretary which instructed that councils should procure hand washbasins, disposal bins, sanitisers and washing soap, toilet paper and water tanks which must be installed at all schools.
He said while aware that the exercise came at a cost as it was not budgeted for, there was a need to work together.
“This is an emergency that needs extraordinary measures for it to be addressed,” he said.
The assistant minister advised that they should guard against loopholes which had the potential to breed corrupt, thereby compromising the delivery of the products.
He said the local government ministry intends to ensure that by the time schools resumed, they would be in a better position for use.
He said despite no known cases of COVID-19 in Botswana, the government remained committed to making sure that the virus did not reach the country.
Mr Modukanele said he was pleased with the report of the Letlhakeng Sub-district as they made sure that no one was left behind in the fight against COVID-19.
Letlhakeng Sub-district senior assistant council secretary, Mr Joseph Segopa said P3 million would be needed to improve sanitation and hygiene in the 26 primary schools in their jurisdiction which comprise of 12 549 pupils.
