THOUSANDS OF FOREIGNERS TO LOSE JOBS AFTER SOUTH AFRICA INTRODUCES QUOTA SYSTEM

The South African Department of Labour is developing a quota system under which the number of foreigners working at any company will be limited using a quota system.

The proposed quota is a maximum of 20% foreign nationals in any company.

This will affect both skilled and unskilled positions, and will also include managerial and non-managerial positions.

Zimbabweans will be the most affected as there are over 4 million Zimbabweans living in South Africa, Most of them working illegally in the Agriculture, Security, Hotels and Restaurants sectors.

The IFP first proposed the quota system in March, citing countries such as Angola, Nigeria and Ghana as some African countries that have an employment quota systems of 30% foreign nationals.

In 2019, there was massive unrest in the Province of KZN in the trucking industry where locals claimed that employers were employing foreigners who often take lower pay and work for higher salaries.

Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi said sectors such as Agriculture, Security, hotels and restaurants should be regulated as they employ millions of foreign nationals.

Employment and Labour Director-General, Thobile Lamati, said quotas are being used all over the world and are not unique to South Africa.
