Police Minister Bheki Cele says farm attacks and murders won’t be classified as a priority crime.
This is because farm attacks usually ask incidents classified as aggravated robbery on a farm or dwelling.
Cele said farm attacks were often related to violence, starting from common assault to attempted murder and rape.
In response to Democratic Alliance MP Andrew Whitfield, Cele said in crime statistics, police reported on 17 different crimes as classified by communities and 4 categories of crimes, which were hooked in to military action .
“The most serious of those crimes are grouped into the category mentioned as contact crimes and include murder, attempted murder, s.e.xual offences, assault with the intent to try to to grievous bodily harm, common assault and aggravated robbery.
“The crimes related to farm attacks are therefore included within the most serious category of crimes Saps [South African Police Service] reports on,” Cele said.
Cele also said rural safety was a top priority for Saps, which had recently adopted a national rural safety strategy to curb crime in farming communities, which recognised the necessity for a national response to deal with crime in rural areas. – News24 Wire
